IMPROVISATION PROJECT

2014 – 2016

Inspired by Noise music, Family Constellations and Dance Butoh, I regard the whole project as an experiment that keeps exploring my inner landscape. The project focuses on the connection between the sound, body and space, and treats the body as a container and an experimental sample for improvisation and body training. Those practises helped me to reconceptualise and reconstruct the soundscape field each time. Meditation for me is no longer a private self-talk or an escape from the reality, it becomes a randomly triggered performance where the audience is watching me while I am gazing at them.

Explorations and medias

I went through the process of making some simple contact microphones to do some field recordings and create some sound sample collage pieces. In the course of some aimless exploration, I have found that toneless ‘music’ makes it easier for people with no dance training to focus on their own perceptions during meditation. In this state, it is more straightforward to express routine unspoken feelings through the movements of dance. In this state, they express more directly what they are unable to describe in their daily lives through the movements of the dance. The sustained soundscape is detached from the logic of language and some kind of cultural contexts. It alienates some sensory experiences to gain another perception.

In some live improvisations, I started to explore the computer music. I simulated some controllers to trigger digital samples through some easy programming(like Pure Dat), changing some data on the digital controller to negative numbers for triggering some unusual sounds, trying to think about whether the positive and negative shape of the sound existe or not.
